You Have to Live in Somebody Else's Country to Understand by Noy Chou
What is it like to be an outsider? What is it like to sit in the class where everyone has blond hair and you have black hair? What is it like when the teacher says, "Whoever wasn't born here raise your hand." And you are the only one. Then, when you raise your hand, everybody looks at you and makes fun of you. You have to live in somebody else's country to understand. What is it like when the teacher treats you like you've been here all your life? What is it like when the teacher speaks too fast and you are the only one who can't understand what he or she is saving, and you try to tell him or her to slow down. Then when you do, everybody says, "If you don't understand, go to a lower class or get lost." You have to live in somebody else's country to understand. What is it like when you are an opposite? When you wear the clothes of your country and they think you are crazy to wear these clothes and you think they are pretty. You have to live in somebody else's country to understand. What is it like when you are always a loser. What is it like when somebody bothers you when you do nothing to them? You tell them to stop but they tell you that they didn't do anything to you. Then, when they keep doing it until you can't stand it any longer, you go up to the teacher and tell him or her to tell them to stop bothering you. They say that they didn't do anything to bother you. Then the teacher asks the person sitting next to you. He says, "Yes, she didn't do anything to her" and you have no witness to turn to. So the teacher thinks you are a liar. You have to live in somebody else's country to understand. What is it like when you try to talk and you don't pronounce the words right? They don't understand you. They laugh at you but you don't know that they are laughing at you, and you start to laugh with them. They say, "Are you crazy, laughing at yourself? Go get lost, girl." You have to live in somebody else's country without a language to understand. What is it like when you walk in the street and everybody turns around to look at you and you don't know that they are looking at you. Then, when you find out, you want to hide your face but you don't know where to hide because they are everywhere. You have to live in somebody else's country to feel it.

1. Most foreigners are treated like outsiders in our country. One group that i could best relate this are the Guatamalaens. 2.They develope hatred for the native people of that country. 3. Although we may not always understand them we should consider that they may feel uncomfortable and do what you can to help them with that. 4.You should be friendly with them, making them feel like they were part of something. 5."Then when you do, everybody says, "If you don't understand, go to a lower class or get lost" I feel strongly about this because when something like this is said to someone they may be very hurt by it. They may develope lower self-esteem and be worse of then they initially were.
1. What groups and individuals are treated like outsiders in America? People from other countries are considered outsiders in America. Also, people who look different are treated differently. 2. What are the possible results or consequences when people feel like outsiders in their surroundings? When people feel like outsiders, they may go to the extreme. They feel left out and may want to go back to where they came from. 3. What did you learn from this experience and the poem that might help you to better understand the feelings of outsiders in the future? Not everyone feels part of something when they are new and the people that are orginally from that location should make the new people feel comfortable. 4. How might you act differently toward someone when you recognize that s/he might be feeling like an outsider? I would personally help them if they put in an effort to try to help them but if they seem like they are not interested then i would just let them be. For example, in school girls at lunch sit by themselves, if they smiled or put in interest we would invite them to sit with us, but since they have the expression of hating everything we don't bother. 5. Select any passages or phrases that you feel are the most powerful. "They don't understand" i believe no one is understood no matter what the situation is. Most of the time they don't even understand themselves.
1. Most immigrants to the United States are treated as outsiders. If you look or talk or even have ways from another part of the world you are sometimes looked at as if you didnt belong here. One group that immediately comes to mind are people of Spanish heritage.
2. They tend to isolate themselves from the population of that particular country, and that is why certain places in the U.S. are known as Spanish areas or China town.
3. I learned that even though the lifestyles and cultures are quite different, it would be better to learn about them before judging them. Putting yourself in their shoes before you stereotype them will allow you to have a better understanding of why they are here and what they are trying to accomplish.
4. If you have a feeling that somebody is feeling like an outsider, the kind thing to do would be to support them in a positive way and try and comfort them anyway possible.
5. "What is it like to sit in the class where everyone has blond hair and you have black hair? What is it like when the teacher says, "Whoever wasn't born here raise your hand." And you are the only one." This is a very powerful statement in this poem to me because it is very difficult to deal with being different. Being different from everybody else automatically makes you self-conscious that people are talking about you or making fun of you because of your uniqueness.
What groups and individuals are treated like outsiders in America?
- There are a lot of different groups of people who are treated like outsiders in America. First of all and probably most obvious are the immigrants who are new to our country. There are also those groups who have lived here for generations but are still cast out whenever there is a political struggle.
What are the possible results or consequences when people feel like outsiders in their surroundings?
- When people feel isolated they begin to get depressed and even in some cases angry. In many cases of violence, the perpetrators often felt alone or insignificant to those people who had isolated them. So a possible violent reaction could be a result, whether it is to other people or themselves. Also those cases of isolation are among those in a smaller group; imagine the impact of feeling like an outsider to an entire country. 3. What did you learn from this experience and the poem that might help you to better understand the feelings of outsiders in the future? - No one really wants to feel alone. In cases in which a person feels completely isolated to an enormous group of people, they do feel really lonely. This poem really epitomizes the feeling of being alone even though she is amongst a large group of other students. It gave a really powerful image of what that kind of isolation must feel like. 4. How might you act differently toward someone when you recognize that s/he might be feeling like an outsider?- I think that anyone that feels isolated just needs someone to accept them and their differences and possibly even listen to what they have to say. If I actually see something like this I think I will be more willing to be receptive to that person after I read just how badly the author felt in the poem. 5. Select any passages or phrases that you feel are the most powerful. Explain your selections and why you thought they were potent or emotional.-What is it like when the teacher says, "Whoever wasn't born here raise your hand." And you are the only one. Then, when you raise your hand, everybody looks at you and makes fun of you. You have to live in somebody else's country to understand.- I felt that this section was powerful because as a student I know that when you make a statement or question something in class people do look at you and I could only imagine how that must feel if you were the only person in that class who was different and they were making fun of you.
1_What groups and individuals are treated like outsiders in America? You are treated like an outsider in America if you don't speak english correct, haven a big accent.
2_What are the possible results or consequences when people feel like outsiders in their surroundings? when people feel like an outsider he will grow up to be angry and think of hurting them, being better than them or also make them pay. Also can bring that perrson down and let down it self. lettiung others opinion control their life and feel misarable.3_What did you learn from this experience and the poem that might help you to better understand the feelings of outsiders in the future?basically i lived everything that this poem is trying to say and i still live it. when i came here i felt so alne and no one had the heart tohelp me, and i didn't speak any english at all.if wasn't for one girl i would probably went back to my country because the pressure and the the epty on your heart is so much. sometimes i still feel alone, i know my english is not perfect but thats is what inspires me to be the best i can be. the poem said you had to walk on somebody shoes to understand it.4_How might you act differently toward someone when you recognize that s/he might be feeling like an outsider?being on their shoe before i know what their feeling, and im going to try to make them feel welcome and there is someone they can count off. telling them hat is hard to be on a new country but to look up and see that if they try hard and b their self their accomplish anything.im be there when they need a hand and be a true friend.5_Select any passages or phrases that you feel are the most powerful. Explain your selections and why you thought they were potent or emotional.-i pick this phrase "Then, when you raise your hand, everybody looks at you and makes fun of you.", because i lived that momonet i rembenber when i would raised ma hand and everybody would look at me and make jokes and laugh. it hurts that you trying and the just act stupid about things. i remenber that they tears was running trough my face i feel so small and wishing never came to this country. it's hard when you are an outsider and feel alone.
1. What groups and individuals are treated like outsiders in America? people that are immigrants especially with darker skin are treated unfairly and are considered not american. some groups such as the central americans, african americans, middle easterns, south asians, and east asians are treated unfairly and are not completely thought american even if their ancestors came to this country. the understanding of american is usually thought of pale, white, european descent. and that's a total shame. 2. isolation could lead to depression or a feeling of unwantedness, it could lead to crimes or it could lead to suicide because of the mounting pressure. 3. i learned that some groups of people could go through somethings that others wont feel in their lifetime, and if we see that this kind of thing, then we should step in and help people out, because we know what they may be going throgh. 4. i would go talk to them, and try to comfort them so they feel freiendly and calm and like a member of this place. 5. What is it like to sit in the class where everyone has blond hair and you have black hair? This phrase is very strong because it explains the idea of difference and which really hurts to see in a group, which will most of the time lead to discrimination and racism against that individual.
This poem was a very powerful peom because it really brings out the feeling that some people feel like in a new enviroment, it doesnt have to be just color and race but it could be weight, height, the way one talks, normal or abnormal and straight or not and other things could relate to this, a great peom overall, hail that 9th grader who wrote this, great job!
1) A lot of people are treated like outsiders in America. Like in New Bedford, Guatamalins are treated like outsiders.
2) When people feel like outsiders they would try to find a way to be apart of the group, and if that doesnt work, they would feel hatred towards other people and would hurt others so they know how the outsiders feel like.
3) Outsiders are people with actual feelings. All they want is a feeling of being wanted and to befriend others. They dont want to cause trouble, all they want is to not be rejected from everyone because they are not native here.
4) I would be more friendly and social to them. I would invite them to hang out with me and my friends so he/she could feel welcomed and make more friends, and hopefully they wont feel left out anymore.
5) "What is it like when you walk in the street and everybody turns around to look at you and you don't know that they are looking at you."~ This statement is emotional because it makes you feel self-conscious because you think that something is physically wrong with you.
Reflection~ This poem, everyone, atleast once in a lifetime, will feel like an outsider. Such as moviing to a new country, state, city, or even school. People just want to fit in and sometimes others make it hard for the person that feels like an outsider so he/she feels isolated from the others. It's not easy being use to your environment, and then having to start all over in a place that your not familiar with and have no help to turn to.

1.My opinion on people who get treated differently are the hispanic gutamalons they get discriminated and get teated badly without respect. 2.Some are stronger then others but if not they probably feel like this america is rude and prejudice and they would want to go to their native land. 3.You never know how someone really feels you have to walk in their shoes. 4.You might treat them nicer, more caring. 5.You have to live in somebody else's country to understand.

Others see them and yell GAUT!2.Possible results to cause people to feel like outside surroundings may be color of skin, race or if theyre dressed different, and even if they look strange.3.It taught me that before I judge someone thats new to a place Im from I should think about how I would feel if I was in there shoes.4.Ill try my hardest to make them feel comfortable, become their friend and introduce them to people I know who can become their friend also.5.What is it like to be an outsider? I am of color and I couldnt imagine my life with racism even though it exists, it never happened to me. I would never want to experience that feeling.

1. Arabs and Muslims are two major groups that are treated like out siders in America. 2. Consquences to someone feeling like an out sider in their surroundings vary from extremes like shooting up their schools, jobs, or other public areas to
just being shy and really quite and not wanting to talk to anyone. 3. I learned that you really need to try and get to know someone before treating them like they are different. yeah they may be different from you but you are different to them too.... 4. If i see someone feels like an outside i usually try to be friends with them so that they dont feel completely alone. 5. " to go to the teacher and ask her to have the person stop bothering you but they say i didnt do anything to bother her so she asks the preson near you and she to says they didnt do anything and you have no witnesses to turn to and the teacher lookes at you as a liar.." i feel that those words are very emotional i know what its like to be looked at like a liar because witnesses wouldnt speak up and it hurts so bad.
1. What groups and individuals are treated like outsiders in America? The groups of indivduals in america that are treated like outsiders are the immigrants that basically come to America for a new expirience. For example, the Catholics and Irish were immigrants. In 1844 they burned down two catholic churches. This made these immigrants feel like outsiders because of who they were. They felt targeted.
2. What are the possible results or consequences when people feel like outsiders in their surroundings? The outcomes could be different in a few cases. If the outsider was an immigrant, that immigrant still continued living in America because of the expirience and oppertunities. The immigrants delt with the riots over them just to live a better life here. If the outsiders were maybe children in school that dressed different, these kids could feel really left out. They could do things to hurt themselves, since people are maknig them feel like they don't belong. That's why it's not good to make people feel this way.

3. What did you learn from this experience and the poem that might help you to better understand the feelings of outsiders in the future? I learned how people feel when they dont belong. I learned how people can easily misjudge the people that they dont accept just because of their differences. I feel like I understand more what it feels like to actually be called a looser. I learned that the people who do feel like these outsiders `feel no escape.
4. How might you act differently toward someone when you recognize that s/he might be feeling like an outsider?I would act differently if I knew someone was feeling this way. I would want to try and talk to them, help them realize that not everyone is out to judge their looks and lack of my language knowledge. I would try to make them comfortable and attempt to get other people in acceptance of them. I cant begin to imagine how a person treated like this one could feel; completely alone in a strange world.
5. Select any passages or phrases that you feel are the most powerful. Explain your selections and why you thought they were potent or emotional. What is it like when you walk in the street and everybody turns around to look at you and you don't know that they are looking at you. Then, when you find out, you want to hide your face but you don't know where to hide because they are everywhere. This passage just ate away at me. I have never felt as alone as this girl must have felt in this situation. Nobody understands her culture, her thoughts, and her feelings. Being in a new world and having no acceptance just because of an appearance is not a good feeling. This just makes me think a lot, and wonder how people could laugh at someone because of their way of life, their own culture. REFLECTIONThis poem really has a great impact on me. I feel like its a very depressing a mind blowing poem. She uses questions in the beginning to already get you thinking, like What is it like to sit in the class where everyone has blond hair and you have black hair? Those questions do in fact have an impact on the reader. I believe she tells her feelings just as she feels. You realize that the children in her class are making her feel like she is a looser just because of her culture, What is it like when you are always a loser. I know I dont fully understand, because I dontlive in some elses country, but by reading this poem Im not so fond of the idea of leaving mine. (FINISHED)

1. What groups and individuals are treated like outsiders in America? I would say the most likely outsiders would be arabs and muslims because of the strong sterotype place on them. 2. What are the possible results or consequences when people feel like outsiders in their surroundings? the results could vary, some people keep quiet and continue with their everyday life while others retaliate, and turn to gang violence of there "own" people to feel like they belong. 3. What did you learn from this experience and the poem that might help you to better understand the feelings of outsiders in the future? To help them feel as if they fit in, never judge them because you dont know how it is to be an outsider. 4. How might you act differently toward someone when you recognize that s/he might be feeling like an outsider? you might try to make them feel involved, be a little more friendly. 5. Select any passages or phrases that you feel are the most powerful. Explain your selections and why you thought they were potent or emotional. "What is it like when you try to talk and you don't pronounce the words right? They don't understand you. They laugh at you but you don't know that they are laughing at you, and you start to laugh with them. They say, "Are you crazy, laughing at yourself? Go get lost, girl."
I think this is most powerful because i have observed situations like this. People laugh when there being made fun of, but you can tell in their eyes that its really hurting them. Maybe the laughter is fighting off the tears.

1.) the group of individuals treated like outsiders are people whom dont understand or speak the english language.
2.)the possible consequences when people feel like outsider is they seem to be afraid to get into social groups because there afraid of social humiliation and the juss become outcasts.
3.)i learned that people whom know a different language need time and comprehension when they cannot speak engish and nobody has the right to make fun of them.
4.)if i thought somone was feeling like an outsider i would try to associate with them and make them feel alot better and maybe teach them the ropes if they were new.
5.) "They laugh at you but you don't know that they are laughing at you, and you start to laugh with them. They say, "Are you crazy, laughing at yourself? Go get lost, girl." You have to live in somebody else's country without a language to understand."
i think this was a powerful phrase because it show how badly this gurl is treated by her peers whom are not understanding to her diffuculty to speak english properly.
Really that i have seen no one but if i had to say someone it would have to be the muslims because of there religon and faith witch caused the attack of america on 9/11 and we lost trust in them.
They will mostlikely try to adapt and change and depending on what there race or religon is they could end up dishonoring there family because they want to chnage so they can fit in
I always never had a problem with people from other country or races because i only care about the person not style since style isnt everthing but it will help me relize how they feel and what is actually goin on with the racism in the US
I would incourage them to be therselves because it is better to be one of a kind than it is to be all of the same kind makes u stand out more and show that u are not afraid to show your style your race your religon it shows that you are not afraid to show who you really are.
1. Most foreigners are treated like outsiders in our country. One group that i could best relate this are the Guatamalans, actually not only Guatamalans but also Mexicans, Hondurans, ect.
1.What groups and individuals are treated like outsiders in America? some groups of people who are treated like outsiders in america are middle easterns and jews.for quite some time it has been this way
2.What are the possible results or consequences when people feel like outsiders in their surroundings? some possable results of feeling like an outsider could be negative retaliation(threats, attacks, ect.)a person might also flee the place of which they are being treated this way.
3.What did you learn from this experience and the poem that might help you to better understand the feelings of outsiders in the future? Although we may not always understand them we should consider that they may feel uncomfortable and do what you can to help them with that
4. How might you act differently toward someone when you recognize that s/he might be feeling like an outsider? i usually try to get to know the people nobody else bothers with.it makes me feel like i have contributed posatively and im sure it make a effective difference in thier life
5. Select any passages or phrases that you feel are the most powerful. Explain your selections and why you thought they were potent or emotional.
``What is it like when you walk in the street and everybody turns around to look at you and you don't know that they are looking at you. Then, when you find out, you want to hide your face but you don't know where to hide because they are everywhere.`` i personally dont know what this feels like but i think it would be unbearably uncomfortable.i do know what it feels like to want to hide but i cant because there are people everywhere.
1. People that come from different countries and have different beliefs or religions or cultures i think are the outsiders in America. 2. People that feel like an outsider they arent as social, they dont know how to deal with stuff, they feel like people dont care and that hurts them and they arent the same because of that which can result to bad things that could happen to those people. 3. I think that this poem is really good and everyone should read it to see how people feel and understand what people go through to really know i learned to give people chances and to not care about what someone looks like or what someones belief is because that dosent matter. 4. I wouldnt act differently to someone who feels like an outsider. 5. The part that i feel that was most powerful to me was when the person talks about when they try to talk or try to hide no matter where they go someone is there to put them down. I think that it was most potent to me is because people really do go through that and its not right and people shouldnt try to put people down because no ones perfect.
This poem was written by a 9th grade student from a south Boston high school. Read the poem and share your thoughts on the questions following.
You Have to Live in Somebody Else's Country to Understand by Noy Chou
What is it like to be an outsider? an outsider does not get the same respect as some as somebody who lives here. they can not get the same job some are treaten and or hurt
What is it like to sit in the class where everyone has blond hair and you have black hair? you feel like you dont belong their as an individual
What is it like when the teacher says, "Whoever wasn't born here raise your hand." And you are the only one. Then, when you raise your hand, everybody looks at you and makes fun of you. i would feel ashamed and ambarrased because nobody likes you and you dont fit in with that clique
You have to live in somebody else's country to understand. What is it like when the teacher treats you like you've been here all your life? if the teacher treats you like you been here all your life thats means you adapted to the society
What is it like when the teacher speaks too fast and you are the only one who can't understand what he or she is saving, and you try to tell him or her to slow down. Then when you do, everybody says, "If you don't understand, go to a lower class or get lost." i would feel like im dumb because i cant undrestand or keep up with the rest
You have to live in somebody else's country to understand. What is it like when you are an opposite? i think you do because just reading a learning about it dosent put you right in the action of whats takin place in somebodys else country
When you wear the clothes of your country and they think you are crazy to wear these clothes and you think they are pretty. You have to live in somebody else's country to understand. when you wear different clothes that means you follow your beliefes and religion and you should not let nobady put you down
What is it like when you are always a loser. when you are always a loser youy feel like you have no friebd and your left out of everything
You have to live in somebody else's country to understand. you would wish you speak the language so you can get back at them
What is it like when you try to talk and you don't pronounce the words right? people will start calling you names and making fun of you
What is it like when you walk in the street and everybody turns around to look at you and you don't know that they are looking at you. Then, when you find out, you want to hide your face but you don't know where to hide because they are everywhere. you should never be afraid of what people think about you always keep your head up and have pride in yourself
Questions:
1. What groups and individuals are treated like outsiders in America? they are treated like "slaves" they have to do the dirty work and get paid less then everybody else in their surroundings? 3. What did you learn from this experience and the poem that might help you to better understand the feelings of outsiders in the future? when you recognize that s/he might be feeling like an outsider? i learned not to judge people by their culture
5. Select any passages or phrases that you feel are the most powerful. Explain your selections and why you thought they were p otent or emotional.
Then when you do, everybody says, "If you don't understand, go to a lower class or get lost" I feel strongly about this because when something like this is said to someone they may be very hurt by it. They may develope lower self-esteem and be worse of then they initially were.

what this poem met to me is that when people go to a different country they are not treated the same and are humiliated by others
1.I think pretty much anyone from another country is going to feel like an outsider in America at some point in their lives. Theyre going to obviously feel sort of left out or set apart from anyone who is from America. 2.There are so many possible consequences to those who feel like outsiders in their surroundings. They must feel all kinds of emotions. I would think them to be angry for one, angry that some people may not accept them. They might even feel sad that they are sort of isolated from things going on around them. Lastly they might feel a little confused as to why people arent accepting them in the country. 3.This poem teaches us that everyone should be treated with respect no matter where they come from, and they shouldnt be ignored just because they arent from America. 4.If I was ever in that position I would try my best to help them feel more belonging, and less segregated. 5.What is it like when you are an opposite? This statement, I feel is very prevailing, I think everyone at one point or another feels different from others, not just in where you come from, but for anything.
1. i feel that anyone has the potential to feel as an outsider, not only in America itself, but just about anywhere they go. People of different nationalities and cultures that come from different countries may feel like outsiders coming into the country. 2. when people feel like outsiders they might tend to close up and not be as open to others or anything within those surroundings. No one lieks to feel uncomfortable when around others.
1. What groups and individuals are treated like outsiders in America? i think anyone who is from another country is going to feel like an outsider. 2. What are the possible results or consequences when people feel like outsiders in their surroundings? they could have problems being social for the rest of their life and they could be afraid to speak their mind becasue their afraid theyll get made fun of.
3. What did you learn from this experience and the poem that might help you to better understand the feelings of outsiders in the future? that they are people just like me and you and no one has the right to make fun of them and their feelings are probly sad all the time.
4. How might you act differently toward someone when you recognize that he/she might be feeling like an outsider? i would try to help them feel like they belong and i would become their friend.
5. Select any passages or phrases that you feel are the most powerful. Explain your selections and why you thought they were potent or emotional. "You have to live in somebody else's country to understand." i think that is the most powerful phrase in this poem because its true you have to live in someone else's country to understand and if all the people who make fun of outsiders lived some where new and that happened to them they wouldnt like it so they need to understand where outsiders are coming from.

No one lieks to feel uncomfortable when around others. 3. i always new not to push people to the side and accept people for who they are, but this poem made me realize that not everyone out there thinks as i do. it must be tough for someone from another country to start a new life somewhere else, its bad enough that they basically have to start all over and build there lives. but the thought of having to worry about what others will think of them and feeling accepted brings it to a whole different level. 4. i would try to show them that they can be themselves around me and i'll have no problem accepting them for who they are. 5. "You have to live in someone else's country to understand." this line is repeated many times in the poem because it seems to me as if its the main point. It's true, you have to live in another country to understand how it feels to be an "outsider". You have to live in someone elses country to know how it feels to start a new life not knowing or understanding much about the country itself. You have to live in someone elses country to feel left out and isolated in ways you couldnt even imagine. "You have to live in someone elses;'s country to understand."
