During the post WWII years there were many developments that are reflected in our ways of life today. Speak about the these social, economic and political developments, specifically during the 1950's and show how they are reflected in our lives today.
Any good?????? Should there be no references to the present?

Is this too broad? Too specific? Not very clear? I dunno. Help me out? Do you at least understand what I'm trying to ask? I not very good with words and how they come out, as we all well know...
Using your knowledge of the years 1945 to 1960, what were the political, economic, and social causes of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union?
This is all I can think of at the moment, any advice? =/

Pam, what do you mean by 'developments'? Also, I know everyone is trying to be political, economic and social - but we don't want to overdo it.

McCarthyism and the effect teh Red Scare had upon people politically, socially, and religeously.
Again, I want to move you all beyond the idea of introducing an issue and measuring its political, economic and social impact. Check out the other DBQ's in the link I gave you. Also, don't be limited to just the topics we've already covered.

You're looking for causes of the conflict? Why not examine the dynamics of that conflict from 1945-1970? Pick an example and focus on that, or a foreign policy theory (containment, massive retaliation, etc.)?

How do you quantify 'benefitting the world'?
And how do you define 'limit'? Does that mean that we simply have to confront expansion, even if we are not successful?
To what extent did HUAC and other government activities lead to the paranoia of the Red Scare in the American middle class, especially suburbia.
???????????
How do you quantify and wualify 'paranoia'? How can you prove a connection between HUAC and paranoia? Coudln't you say that paranoia led to the Red Scare?
During the 1950's there was a large change in the American lifestyle. In what ways did the economy relate to this social, political, and technological channge in the United States.

-'Paranoia' would be the suspicion that people of their neighbors being a Commie and extreme fear of Nuclear warfare that lead to the purchasing of home fall out shelters and stocking up on canned goods in a secret room in the cellar.
-Couldn't you say HUAC caused paranoia or better yet suspicion among America with their 'Hollywood Blacklist" and anti-communist propaganda.
-Couldn't you also say that the Red Scare was the paranoia and suspicion felt against Commies and Communist sympathizers. Well, I guess you could say that paranoia and suspicion lead to the Red Scare because without suspicion there wouldn't have been a Red Scare.
Would this work or is it to close to the same thing as before;

I thought I could leave the definition of "limit" to the writer so they could have a bit more freedom with their answer. I could change it to "slow the expansion of Communism" or something similar to make it more direct if necessary. I had actually meant to tack on "economy" at the end, making it "benefitting the world economy," but I forgot to.

Think carefully about the words you use here: promote and demote 'outlook'. That is very vague. Imagine we are just having a conversation. What would your question be then?
Spoiler
how bout any of these ?
how did television alter the perception of American life in the 1950's?
OR
Asses the validity of this statement. television contributed to the propoganda against the Soviets during the Cold War. (consider the political and ideological aspects of this statement.)

What I meant is that is going to be hard to prove 'paranoia' unless you look at it from a sociological perspective with a lot of data. And why do you think, in your question, that it would only affect the middle class of suburbia?
Upon looking at mine, it's more or less Robert's but with a brick of stupid tied around it. He did it better, he can keep it.
Assess the validity of this statement: The United States held true to its Constitution and its rhetoric of democratic ideals when working against both domestic and international Communism in the early years of the Cold War (1945-1960).

I just figured middle class suburban suspicions are easier to show, like people building and buying bomb shelters, and schools practicing drills for nuclear warfare.

OK. That works in a better direction, but I would chose a different (more active) verb than 'describe' which just means 'give a laundry list'. Know what I mean? How can you get the writer to take a position?

True, but if you build the question around the positions taken rather than the evidence needed, you would be more effective. How about something as simple as 'American anti-communism was an inneffective political tool for shaping public policy and social attitudes during the Cold War?' or something like that...

Okay. To prove it, I wold need actual figures on how many participated in x amount of movements, right? For example, if I said something like 100,000 people were involved in the civil rights movement, would that be proving it? (That's not an actual figure, I'm just saying). So, perhaps for the thesis statement, would I add something (to prove that it affected a lot of people) like:
"Between the years of 1960 and 1969, x amount of people were affected by America's change of views on expression, segregation and war. How was this helped along by America's push toward nonconformity."? I don't know if that's exactly what you're looking for. joelhead

Actually, we need to talk face to face. I think we're dancing with ideas and words.
Explain the political and religious exploitation of the Red Scare as well as its economic necessity in Post-War America.
Whoa. This one is really hard to defend. 1) religions exploited the red scare - as if communism was a victim?? 2) anti-communism was an economic necessity??

To what extent did the widespread popularity of the television in the 1950's change America politically, culturally, and economically.
You might want to make this into a statement and anticipate some of the 'changes' that you are expecting the writer to create.
Advances in technology allowed the amount of American families who owned a household to increase dramatically. To what extent did the widespread popularity of television influence American culturally, politcially, and economically.

Believe me, sometimes if (rarely) I am watching television, I feel like I am increasing... What specfically is 'increasing' here? These statements don't seem to connect conceptually.
During the post WWII years there were many factors that contributed to the creation of the nations culture and lifestyle during the 1950's, that benefited some and excluded others. Describe the culture and lifestyle of the 1950's in regards to; woman, the work place, African Americans and demographic changes.
OK. That works in a better direction, but I would chose a different (more active) verb than 'describe' which just means 'give a laundry list'. Know what I mean? How can you get the writer to take a position?

Upon looking at mine, it's more or less Robert's but with a brick of stupid tied around it. He did it better, he can keep it.
Assess the validity of this statement: The United States held true to its Constitution and its rhetoric of democratic ideals when working against both domestic and international Communism in the early years of the Cold War (1945-1960).
During the post WWII years there were many changes in society that led to a different way of life, especially during the 1950s and early 1960s.
Explain the causes of these changes and they way they benefitted, or didnt benefit, Americans in regards to; the home sphere, the work place, African Americans, and demographic changes.
The Vietnam War was the most opposed war in our country's recent history. Was it justified? If it was, what were the political and military justifications for this war?
The Vietnam War was the most opposed war in our country's recent history. Was it justified? If it was, what were the political and military justifications for this war?
OK. I have to throw in on this one. You can't say that it was the most opposed war and then ask if it was justified. You've set a bias.
The Vietnam War was the most controversal war in our country's recent history. Was it justified? If it was, what were the political and military justifications for this war?
During the 1950's there was a large change in the American lifestyle. In what ways did the economy relate to this social, political, and technological channge in the United States.
this is just a thought. how can i improve it? because i know it needs it.
Well, you are talking about many different ideas here. It needs to be more focused. Is the center of the question the economy?
yes. the center of the question is the economy. how about this?
In what ways did the economy influence this social, political, and technological change in the United States?
How about you form this question as a statement and consider how it could be answered from different perspectives. The differences in question options shouldn't come from the types of information that a student can include or not, but the different positions that can be defended with evidence.
hm. . so i'd basically be saying
The economy influenced the social, political, and technological change in America during the 1960's.
but i'm not sure what else you mean for me to do.
Actually, we need to talk face to face. I think we're dancing with ideas and words.
arg. okay. do you still want me to try and collect primary source documents?
I'm going to be revising my question a little. I think this is a little better. How great of an effect did the auto-mobile have on changing America economically, and culturally?
I need help finding documents. Those links on Mrs. Pojer's site aren't helping me much. Please and thank you.
James, the power point on the vietman war. It helped me a bit; i got a few documents as well as ideas for outside information. just make sure you stay in your time period; i started getting stuff from the 70s without realzing it!
and i don't even know if my question makes sense..
To what extent was "massive retaliation" an effective foriegn policy tool against the Soviet Union during the Cold War era, and how did it affect the United States both economically and politically?

No, you can't go in that direction. How great is way too ambiguous. Some will say a lot and some a little.
Here's what you can use: The automobile influenced American culture and economics more than any other factor. Assess the validity of this statement with your analysis of the documents and use of outside information from 1950-1970.

Eisenhower said some interesting things in this article. You'd have to find the original documents, but here's the site: http://hnn.us/articles/47326.html. You could also find where he said this, "Ultimately some President might have to decide that it was his duty to strike the first blow against the USSR. You try to shoot your enemy before he shoots you." I'd also include information from his famous farewll address where he warns Americans against the growth of a permanent military-industrial complex.

This was last year's DBQ question. I have it in class, not home.
