1943-1963 : Greg

1943-  Tehran Conference. The U.S., Britain, and the Soviet Union agree on the plans for Operation Overlord (AKA D-Day). Also, there was a tentative agreement on the formation of the U.N.
1944- Operation Overlord goes into effect on D-Day. Marked the beginning of a massive campaign in France.
1945- Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Caused Japan to surrender, brought the U.S. into a new era.
1946- Atomic Energy Act. More or less paved the way for America's nuclear program from then on.
1947- Taft-Hartley Act. It gave American unions several painful setbacks, including outlawing closed shops.
1948- The U.S. supports the founding of Israel. War breaks out soon afterward in the Middle East, and the U.S. support of Israel, combined with its need for oil, would shape Middle East policy for decades.
1949- The U.S. is a founding member of NATO. It showed the establishment of a Western coalition against the Communists in the East.
1950- Joseph McCarthy's Wheeling, WV Speech. The speech became the first claim he made against supposed Communists in the government and the beginning in earnest of his efforts.
1951- The Invention of the Oral Contraceptive. Helped shape American attitudes towards sex for generations to come, and played a major part in the following decade's Sexual Revolution.
1952- The Successful Testing of the Hydrogen Bomb. It showed that nuclear weapons could be far more devastating than just the early models used on Japan, and would make the threat of nuclear exchange far more dire by increasing the potential damage.
1953-  Eisenhower approves NSC 168/2. The document stated that nuclear weapons were to be maintained and the stockpile was to be expanded to deal with the Communist threat.
1954- Brown v. Board of Education. Gave government support to the campaign against school segregation, and helped fuel the Civil Rights Movement.
1955- The AFL and CIO merge. This consolidated the largest labor unions in the U.S. into one group, strengthening the movement.
1956- The Interstate Highway Act is passed. This act revolutionized the U.S. highway system, speeding both transport and commerce, as well as contributing to the car culture of the 1950s.
1957- Eisenhower authorizes the use of National Guard troops to integrate Little Rock schools. This set a precedent for the government in integration, as well as provided a defeat for Southern segregationists.
1958- NASA Forms. This showed U.S. committment to the space race, which it was sorely behind in, as an attempt to fight the Soviets through scientific progress rather than military or economic force.
1959- The Cuban Revolution ends. With a Communist government in power, many American officials became nervous of what the Soviets could do with the help of sympathetic Cuban officials.
1960- Students For a Democratic Society forms. This activist group became the first of many politically oriented student groups to form during the turbulent 1960s, and would be a powerful voice for liberal social change.
1961- The Bay of Pigs Invasion. Intensified Cuban-American and Soviet-American relations after it was revealed the CIA was behind it.
1962- The Cuban Missile Crisis. (sorry to go Cuba-heavy, but it WAS important) It was the closest the U.S. and the Soviets ever got to a nuclear exchange. Resulted in the end of the threat of nuclear launch from Cuba.
1963- Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Greatly limited the conditions in which both the U.S. and U.S.S.R. could test nuclear weapons, literally sending them underground.

1754 - 1774 (:

1754: The French & indian war began at this time. This war was won by the british with the help of American militia men, but the victory came at a high cost. This war caused staggering debt for the British which forced them to tax the colonies which caused tension between the two and led to the revolution.

1754: the Albany Congress met in 1754, in hopes of convincing the Iroquois Indians to fight against the French. they wrote up a treaty, but when the representatives got back to their hometown, noone would ratify the treaty and it never really came into effect.

1760: King George III rises to power

1763: Finally the French and Indian War ends with the treaty of Paris which encouraged English dominance in North America, France had to give up all claims in north america and England and Spain were now the only ones residing in that area. King George III signs the Proclamation Act of 1763. this proclamation was made in order to stop colonial expansion into western frontiers. The indians were nervous that once the French left, the colonists were going to take their land, so this act prevented them from doing that, but it also left alot of tension between the colonists and the mother country.

1764: sugar act placed on sugar and mollasses was mainly a tax to gain income from the tropical west indies colony. & currency act which effectively controlled the colonial currency system.

1765: parliament enacts the stamp act which requires a special seal to be on all official documents such as marriage certificates, birth certificates, and even some mail. Also the quartering act comes into effect, which states that if a British soldier needs to come into your house and stay the night, you can not deny them. After these acts, stamp act congress meets for the first time, and discussed the situation of the colonies and what they needed to do about Englands hand grabbin there colonies money.

1766: stamp act was repealed *& the declaratory act which was even more controlling, went into affect. this act stated that Britian had the right to tax, enforce, and place laws on the colonies "in all cases whatsoever."

1767: Townshend act was a series of acts whos main goal was to raise money for the judges and governors who were independent of colonial rule. the money would have helped enforce other taxes upon the colonies.

1768: Boston was swarming with British soldiers, because they were giving the most trouble, and were also very valuable to Britian, so they needed to have it under control.

1770: After all these taxes, colonial tension grew, which led to a confrontation between a crowd of colonists, and some british red coats. soldiers began to fire into the crowd killing 5 people in all. this event was known as the Boston Massacre and sparked the idea of revolution across the colonies. Also in 1770, the townshend act was repealed.

1773: The Tea Act became the final straw. this act placed a small tax on tea, but the colonists did not want to have english rule continue to rule the way they were living.in order to protests the tax, a crowd of men (many son of liberty members)  dressed as indians and dumped 342 chests of British tea into the Boston harbor. This incident is well known as the Boston Tea Party.

1774: After the Boston Tea Party, Parliament was enraged and began to enforce a series of acts known as the intolerable acts. This series of  acts contained the Boston Port Act, which closed the port of Boston from any ships going out, and any coming in. The massachusettes government act, which was designed to supress and restore order into the Massachusettes bay area (mainly because of the boston tea party) the quartering act (mentioned before) and The quebec act. Also the First continental congress convened at this time. This congress created options on how they were to confront the british, the debated on boycotting all british goods, and also writing a petition of grievances to the king, so that he could address those grievances. Later on this congress would be used to unite the country for war.
