1. Unfortunately there has been a very tragic event and we have lost a member of our community to gang violence. It is time we let go of our differences and come together as one. Forget about what happened in the past and work on making the future better. Future generations will not have to worry about gang violence if we settle the problems we are having right now. We must unite as one community, and make this city a safer place for us, our children, and whoever else has a connection to this area.

5. I think my child's cultural and ethnic identity will be influenced by how he is raised by my wife and I. The type of neighborhood he is brought up it in will effect the way he lives and decisions he makes. Music and literature will shape his cultural indentity and enable individuality. In the end however, it is best that I let him make his own decisions on what he chooses to listen to, watch, or hang out with because that is his indentity and not mine.

5. You are a young parent.  In your journal, predict what factors will influence your childs ethnic and cultural identity. [identity]

My child is going to grow up in a city with a variety of different people and cultures as I did in New Bedford. Festivals and schools will be a part of their entire life. What they learn in school will play a major role in the growing up stage. Obviously myself, as a parent, am going to do my part in influencing my childs ethnic and cultural identity.

9.     You are a young Hispanic girl.  In an invitation to your friends, explain the importance of your Quinceañera ceremony. [identity]

You are invited to be a part of my one and only Quinceanera. It will be a great deal to me if you attended. This only comes once in a lifetime and I would like the most important people in my life to be a part of it. It will be an enormous celebration of me becoming a woman with an extravagant festivities. Please be a part. Thank you.

Im sure you have all heard of the unfortunate incidents that took place this morning. Many of you are saddened by this, and I myself am as well. We cant let this bring us down. We as a community have to stick together, and keep the violence out. Does anyone of you have an idea of what we can do to keep the streets clean. Stop the young ones from getting involved with these gangs at an early age. Maybe some afterschool activites or clubs, a basketball league, or dance class. Anything ranging in those categories.  We have to help these children have a safe and stable place they can rely on in their lives. Thank you.

we

we must come together to over come the tragedy and the violence that are happening amoungst us today. We must show that gang violence is not going to be tolerated and we are here for the victims. And victoms meaning everyone who new the person who was shot wether u werte friends or family he was an important member of the comunity and we must wrok together to make ur community better if were were to seperate things will only get worse.

The things that would influence my childs ethnic and cultural understandings are the who were and how he is raised. for instance if he is raised by a muslim he will more than likely follow there cultural understandins and traits. If he was raised in america he will be more used to the american treaits there for they would have more of an american back ground. But say he was a budist chinese imagrant born in america but raised by his parents he would most likely follow the traits of his family and the religon of his family.;

what will it take to stop this before more people get hurt or killed this is our community we should be working together trying to make things right not working agisnt each other to make things wrong  this our community we should be proud of it . plus there no just hurting the victim there hurting there family they think bout how  there mom would be if they were hurt or died then maybe this community would come together and have peace.

5.if i was a young parent the factors that would influence my childs etnic and cultural background would be how i brought them up what kind  of community we were living in what kind of clothes they wore and the music they listen to.we would have similar cultural identity bout  they would form there own as well

9.        You are a young Hispanic girl.  In an invitation to your friends, explain the importance of your Quinceanera ceremony. [identity]

You are coordinately invited to Cassandra's Quinceanera

For: Cassandra Furtado
When: August 18th
Time: 6:00-Midnight
Where: Royal Cafe II
R.S.V.P by July 30th~~~~50smile.gif**-****

Mostly everyone knows what a Quinceanera is and what it means to a young Hispanic girl. It is one of the most important days in her life, besides her wedding day. A Quinceanera occurs when a young girl celebrates her 15th birthday. This is not just an ordinary birthday that they celebrate; it is the most important birthday because it symbolizes the transition from childhood to womanhood. This event is so elaborate because there is a special ritual in the process, such as the religious ceremony. This religious ceremony is the most important part because it is when the Quinceanera receives a blessing and the ceremony prepares the Quinceanera and advises her on this new stage in her life. In earlier times, the Quinceanera serves as a day for the parents of the young girl to present their daughter into society and show that they matured.

1.       You are a young minister speaking to your church after a gang violence incident.  Deliver your speech about togetherness. [community]

Ladies, Gentlemen, and children of all ages, a very horrible incident has occurred Friday, June 3, 2008. Young adults were badly hurt and a few lives were even taken because of idiocy. Everyone feels anger, hate, and awful about, the event and we must not run off course and stay together. These gang members do not know how to look for others for strength and help. They express their feelings of pain by giving pain to others. We must not follow their actions, because we are angry, we must not copy the way the gang members expressed their anger. Violence solves nothing! Violence can cause fatal consequences. We should not fight each other; we should help those in need.

5.     You are a young parent.  In your journal, predict what factors will influence your childs ethnic and cultural identity. [identity]

dear journal,i just had my daughter last tuesday.i wish for her to grow up as a diverse individual and accept others and thier identity.i believe some contributing factors are the people she chooses to associate herself with and weather those people are diverse as well or if they make fun and ridicule a certain race or religion.i want my daughter to be proud of her race and cultural identity and maybe practice some traditions of those ethnicities.i think if she learns  about her cultural identity, she will be happy to represent the culture.

6.     You are an ethnomusicologist.  Write an article to your peers explaining the role cultural identity plays in making folk music. [community]

cultural identity plays a huge role in folk music.take chinese music for example. The music is diverse, sometimes jolly, sometimes sad and often based on Western pop music and TV theme songs. Ensembles consisting of mouth organs (sheng), shawms (suona), flutes (dizi) and percussion instruments (especially yunluo gongs) are popular in northern villages.these are instraments most people have never heard of but to the northern villagers,it is common knowledge.compare this example to american music, when some one mentions american music, some of the first instraments that come to mind may be the elctric guitar and drums.it is important to understand the culture of a group to better understand thier style of music.in portugual, music is usually happy and avoids negtivity, such as thier ``fado``...fado is the songs of romance that is usually sang in portuguese coffe shops.

4. There are a lot of important people in my community, massachusetts. people such as scott lang, deval patrick, john kerry, ted edwards, mitt romney. these men are very influential people because this set of people make the laws and the regulation of our community. these people relate to each other very closely because they are all colleagues and politicians that work together to bring chang and prosperity to the face of our nation. this all is relevant to me as well because i am interested in politics and i think it is the authentic game of life which is very important to listen to and observe.

1. dear my brothers and sisters, it is great sorrow and grief that we have to face due to the death of some young teenagers that were killed as a result of gang violence. those boys had been there at the wrong place at the wrong time, therefore they were mistakingly killed. i ask you all to please console each other and the families of those boys who passed away, please good people, lets comfort each other in this time of desperate need and restlessness. thank you and god bless you all!

unfurtunuatly do to gang violence thers has been a lot of people who have been killd. You guys that are a live and have survived can turn your life around. How would you like to not even to be able to grow up and make an importance in this community. think about how your parents and family are going to feel and their son/daughter has been killed do to gang violence. how would you feel not to be able to have a kid, or those who have kids not to be able to make a importance in thier life

You are a young parent.  In your journal, predict what factors will influence your childs ethnic and cultural identity
my childs life would be most influenced by the community we live in, the people how he/she associates with and goes to school with, but mostly the parents will influence in its life. if he/she lives with a community with th same he/she is he/she would be closer to is culture

1. People of the church. I know the recent events that took place in our community was a tragedy. Although there has been a lot of hurt it is important for us as brothers and sisters in the community to stick together and consoul one another. With faith and prayer our Father will help us through this painful time.
5. The community i raise my child in, how strict I am (not saying im overly strict) and the facts i teach them will have a major impact on their cuture and ethnicity as they grow up. I want them to experience things that i never got to. i want them to be able to have an open mind and be able to make their own culture out of the one that i show them.

We are gathered here today in rememberance of one of our family members in our community. Although a very sad time, this is not a time to hate or to get revenge but a time to make a difference. Time to teach our children that violence will get us nowhere but by using our minds and being the best citizens we can we can all make a difference. promote the good and be supportive of our local family.

5.     You are a young parent.  In your journal, predict what factors will influence your childs ethnic and cultural identity. [identity]

My childs identity will be determined by their experiences. Living in a city of variety and flavor there is no doubt in my mind that they will be open minded well rounded.

My child is going to grow up in a city with many different people and cultures like me. There are many festivals to celebrate cultures and schools that will be a part of my childs life. My child will go to school to learn. What it will learn in school is going to play an important role in growing up. I will teach and influence my childs ethnics and cultural identity by teaching my child about my heritage. To teach my child about my heritage I will teach my kid to speak, write, and learn about the history an future of my culture.

Your invited to my Quinceanera ceremony. As you all know this ceremony is an important day in my life. It is a celebration for my hispanic heritage. This celebration occurs when a young girl turns 15 years old. It is the time when a young girl prepares for a new stage in life. Usually it serves as a day for the parents of a young girl to prepare their daughter to become mature in society.smile

5. If I was a young parent the factors that would influence my childs ethnic and cultural identity would be how i raise them and what state, city, town or even counry they grew up in. Sometimes how children their age acted around them.

9. Ola, My name is Maria and I am having a Quinceanera. The importance of this is sharing the time that I truely become a woman. I  become independent and grow alot of responsibility. Basically, the true aspects of a young lady/ woman life.

1.     You are a young minister speaking to your church after a gang violence incident.  Deliver your speech about togetherness. [community]

I'm here to tell everyone that after the gang violence incident we must come together, and this experience should make us all stronger. This incident should give us the motivation and strength to stop gang violence and keep our community a safe place for everyone, so that none has to be afraid of the outcomes of gang violence.

5.     You are a young parent.  In your journal, predict what factors will influence your childs ethnic and cultural identity. [identity]

I will raise my child in a place where he/she can grow up being open-minded and accepting of all the ethnic and cultural diversity. They will grow up to be well rounded people who aren't judgemental of the different cultures and nationalities out there.

1. Today we have lost a member of our family. The family God put on the planet not to fight but to make peace and make this a better world to live in. No family is perfect and no city is perfect, but together we can work as one community and get as close to that perfect as we can. Together is the only way it can work. Let us pull through this and pray that gangs and groups of individuals that start trouble be dealt with by the law.

5. Alot of things will identify my child. My child will obviously have a very good opportunity to become successful because there are alot of opportunities in the world. he will be Portuguese and love sports. His main focus will be on his studies.  My child will be culturally diverse.

Well we are all gathered here today all saddened by the lose of a gang violence but we must see to it that we are the only ones with the power in out hands to end these tragidis by becoming one and unitiying putting all diversity aside we are all gods children we must all act as we are brother and sisters and put an end to this take our children and teach them to love one another and show them by setting an example of a good deed. For example helping a neighbor not being a witness to a crime and not telling anyone speak so that our problems can become a less and our unity greater.

5.     You are a young parent.  In your journal, predict what factors will influence your childs ethnic and cultural identity. [identity]

well if i were a young parent and i would predict some factors that will influence my childs ethnic and cultural identity are some things like the music that my family listens to the way they speak and dress things that are poplular in my home and the baby's surroundings everything that has to do with me because a mother is very important in there childs life and everything u do influences there  up bringing.

1. Today we lost a great member of our community due to gang violence. God did not put us on this earth to fight he put us here to love one another and to get along. We lost a life that was so young so pure that life didnt even start for them. We need to end this violence now before we lose more good people. Lets pray for those lost by the way of gang violence and lets pray that all gang members are dealt harshly by the law.

5. My child with enter a city full of different cultures. My child will be culturally diverse which is a good thing. He/she will be proud that he/she is portuguese and he/she will have the chance to become successful just like everyone else in this country. I will encourage him/her not to make the same mistakes that I did when I was younger.

1.     You are a young minister speaking to your church after a gang violence incident.  Deliver your speech about togetherness. [community]

As you all may know, today was a very devistating day in our community. Once again we have lost one of our young. We are all deeply affected by this weither we were a friend or relitive of this child or not. Do you want the next victim to be someone you love ? We need to come together as a community and help protect and lead the younger genteration in the right direction. There are so many oppertunities, so much ahead for these younger ones. We need to do something, build community centers, afterschool programs, extra-curricular activities, anything that will improve the way things are. Im not saying that we will be perfect but we WILL get things fixed if we all come together. God bless.

4.     You are as you are now.  Design a web of important people within your community.  Connect them to you and each other. [community]

There are so many important people in our community. From our mayor of this city, Scott Lang, to the local policeman. I think everyone who works in our community has a effect to it somehow. The mayor helps us with everything that has to with our city, the policemen protect us and keep somethings in line. Everyone in our community is connected somehow because the things the politions do effect how we live, firefighters, policemen, doctors and teachers are needed for our community and we are needed for the taxes and support we give to eachother. Everyone together brings change to our city.

1)      You are a young minister speaking to your church after a gang violence incident. Deliver your speech about togetherness.

-          It is with great sadness that I have to talk about a tragic event here in our own parish. Members of this church have become involved with an incident of gang violence that cost the lives of several young people. It is hard to imagine why someone would want to become part of a group that epitomizes violence, and hate. Could it be that within that group there is a sense of brotherhood and loyalty? I honestly believe that this belief is what keeps these gangs together. Why is it that these groups can only remain together in such terrible circumstances? Can this gang not be constructive and do positive things for the community rather than risk human lives? These are the questions I pose to the congregation today. We need to stay together and try and influence these young adults into turning all of those negative feelings and actions into something that will be positive to our community.

5) You are a young parent.  In your journal, predict what factors will influence your childs ethnic and cultural identity.

-  Living here in America it is hard to try and predict how my child is going to grow-up. There are things that are going to go on around them that are out of my realm of control. Things such as the place that we live and the friends they choose for themselves are obviously going to affect their identity. However my own influence is also going to play a huge role in deciding what cultural and ethnic background they are going to be exposed to at a very young age.

1.) Good morning. As you have heard, thier  has been an act of gang violence in our community.  I would like to ask you, every person in this church, what is your definition of togetherness? Does it involve young people making enemies by dividing themselves up in these groups? No, it's not. It'w when our differences are talked ouut among eachother and solved without violence. Every person is loved equally. People tend to eachother no matter what color their skin is. Togetherness is singing and laughing together as one. Most of us are tired of this separation in our community, this violence. So let's stand up to these gangs and show these young men and women the true meaning of love and togetherness. Let's subtract the guns, knifes, and drugs. Let's put the meaning back into this society. yawn

5.) Being a young parent, I'm always focused on what will influence my child growing up. He will be able to grow up knowing their culture. He will be involved in our celebrations and not take anything for granted. This will allow him to even grow up accepting anyone who walks by. Living in the United States will influence him to expirience and learn about multiple cultures. I will teach him to accpet every person, and to not make fun of anyone. The diverse schools will teach him strenght and give him friends with different backgrounds. Im glad to be a young parent with all of these factors to influence my child.
