Do you support Senator Obama, Senator McCain, a 3rd Party Candidate or... none of the options above.  Explain your reasoning in 500 words!

PS - Sorry about the lateness of the forum post.  I was caught in a swirling cloud of election night number crunching.

The presidential election for 2008 is a very important election. Firstly, because the presidential election is always important, you are picking the person to lead the country, and secondly, because if Barack Obama is elected, he will be the first African American president. If you are eligible to vote, it is very important you do so. Unfortunately, I am not eligible because I am not yet eighteen years old. If I were eighteen years old and registered to vote, I would vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
Some people might argue that Barack Obama does not have much experience. That is why he has Joe Biden as his vice presidential candidate, because Joe Biden is older and has been involved in the government for much longer. So as far as experience, Barack Obama can look to Joe Biden for guidance. Although John McCain has a lot of experience, his vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, has barely any experience at all. If anything were to happen to John McCain if he became president, I do not think that Sarah Palin would be fit to run the country as president.
I think Barack Obama would be a good choice for presidency because I think his views on solutions for the economic crisis is very well thought out. One of the solutions he wants to introduce is to give higher taxes to people who more than two hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year. This is a good idea because it will help to give money to the government without causing the middle and poorer classes to struggle financially. He also plans to give four thousand dollars a year for college students towards tuition fees as long as they do community services. For the less wealthy, this is a very welcomed help because going to college with tuition and other fees can be very expensive. If you are not that wealthy or do not have a scholarship, it is an easy way to help pay.
Barack Obama also plans to bring the troops from Iraq back home to the United States. I think this is necessary for the United States right now. The country is in a financial crisis and the war is costing the country millions each and every day the war goes on. I am not exactly against the war, I just believe that we have kept soldiers over there a little too long. Voting in John McCain would not help to bring the troops home at all. He wants to continue the war until we have won it. Many American citizens believe that the soldiers should come home, so who will decide when we have won it? The war could very well last many more years if John McCain is voted into presidency. I think it is time for a president who will focus on the United States economy and not on war. Barack Obama is right when he says that it is a time for change, it is a time for change, and I do not think the country will get the change it needs with John McCain.

This year's presidential election is one of the most controversial to ever occur in the United State's history. Not only is it during one of the most historical periods of our time, the candidates themselves are historical. The Democratic nominee, Barack Obama, would be the first ever African American president and the Republican nominee, John McCain, would be the oldest man ever to win the presidency. Among both candidates of the election, there are positions I agree and disagree with. I agree the most, however, with Barack Obama.

Obama represents the change we need in the country right now. Since many Americans feel the current political party is not making decisions in the best interest of the United States, it could very well be a smart decision to elect in a different political party for our next president. One issue that needs to be addressed is the war in Iraq. It is extremely obvious that the war is very unpopular with most of the citizens of the nation. They either wish to end the war, or believe that it should not have been started in the first place. Obama has always believed that there was "no military solution" for Iraq and wants to phase the troops out of Iraq in a sixteen month period. I agree with this strategy because he is not immediately taking the troops out, but is gradually bringing them home.

Another issue is in climate change. Both politicians believe that global warming is a problem, but Obama has, in my opinion, has a better plan to help remedy the situation. While McCain only wants to reduce greenhouse gases if other countries such as China and India agree, Obama has a detailed plan that has a specific goal: an 80% cut in USA greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Also, he wants our country to lead the globe in efforts to stop climate change by investing $150 billion in clean energy over a ten year period.

A moral political issue that has the both political parties on opposite sides is the legalization of abortion. McCain wants to overturn the 1973 Supreme Court ruling (Roe v. Wade) that made abortion legal in the United States, though he was previously supportive. Obama, on the other hand, believes that women can make their own decisions concerning their bodies "in conjunction with their doctors and their families and their clergy". I agree very much with his position on this topic for I too believe that it is a personal choice whether or not to have an abortion. In some cases, such as rape, it is almost completely necessary. Also, why would you make people bring children into the world who are not wanted in the first place? They will probably be horribly neglected or mistreated, or put up for adoption.

Finally, the issue on American's minds the most is the failing economy of not only the nation, but the world. They want a president that is able to deal with this tremendous problem. McCain wants to keep the tax cuts for rich households that George Bush passed during his presidency, while Obama would repeal them. Obama is seen more as a representative of the "middle class working man", which has made him very popular across the country. He wants to use targeted tax relief to help middle class families with the rising costs and stagnant pay they are receiving. I believe that this would benefit the country a great deal.

As you can see, the man I wish to see as our next president is the Democratic candidate Barack Obama. While he may not have as much political experience as John McCain, he makes up for it in intelligence, optimism, and a determination to change the course of the United States for the better. I believe he is the best man for the job.

The Presidential campaigns of 2008 have been a long and hard struggle for both Barack Obama, and John McCain. This election is a very important change in our country's history. if John McCain is elected he would be the oldest man to be elected for his first term and also his vice president Sarah Palin would be the first woman vice president in the history of our country. If Barack Obama wins, he will be the first African-American to be President ever. Either way America votes, there will be history. but In the Presidential election of 2008, Senator John McCain, and Senator Barack Obama both have compelling arguments. but in the end i support Barrack Obama.

John McCains campaign attacked Barrack Obama very cruely, spreading rumors that he was a terrorist and muslim. These kind of accusations i cant stand because he should be focusing on what he can do for the country instead of what else to accuse Obama of being. Also John McCain is basically another Bush, and i DO NOT want another George Bush running the country for four more years wasting everybodys time with the same old things. he still supports war which i see no need to. He even wants to increase the amount of soldiers in Iraq. There is nothing to win in this war, all were doing is loosing more men, not progressing. another reason i dont support McCain is because doesnt seem he can make up his mind, he used to support abortion but now he is strongly against it. he also votes and agrees with Bush yet says he is different. John McCain does not inspire change, and i do not want the country staying this way expecially with the economic crisis at hand. we need change which is what Obama is trying to do.

I believe Barrack Obama is a breath of fresh air for this country. He wants to change many things, which i think America needs. He wants to remove the Bush tax cuts for people in the middle class who earn less than 250,000 a year. which i think will help stabilize the country and help the economic situation (: also he does not believe there is a need for a war in Iraq. he wants to start bringing men back which i think is the wisest choice. we have nothing to fight for there and we need to start dealing with our economy instead of another countries. The one and ONLY thing that i do not support with Barrack Obama, is the fact that he supports abortion and wants allow partial-birth abortions which i think is wrong. besides this i think Obama is the man we need for the job. He is intelligent, a good speaker, and i think he will be a great leader, black or white. and NOW he IS the President of the United States, and i wish him luck for the years ahead.

In this years presidential election it is very important that the country gets what it needs in a president.  Both John McCain and Barack Obama are great men, and either is perfectly capable of holding the office as the President of the United States.  Both men have come from tremendous backgrounds with great stories behind them.  Most importantly I think though that voters need to see what has to happen in America to make it a better place and I think it could only be done by voting in Senator John McCain and that is who I strongly support.

There are many issues to be viewed by voters before they just go in on Election Day and vote.  It isnt just about Republican or Democrat it is about which candidate would best help yourself out.  I myself think that John McCain is the best person for me because of his views on the issues that I am most concerned about.  If I were able to vote myself I would put my religious views before anything else because my religion is what is most important to me.

The most major religious view that I have when it comes to voting is abortion and what the candidate plans on doing on the topic if elected.  In my eyes as a Catholic abortion is completely wrong and should not be allowed.  Others say it is not the governments right to tell you if you should be able to abort a pregnancy or not.  When I come across the topic of abortion I view it is killing an innocent baby that has not had the chance to experience life.  People that are for abortion view it as killing undeveloped tissue.  If you do have an unplanned pregnancy it would be much better just to have the baby and be able to give it up for adoption.  If you abort and unborn child you have no idea who that child would have grown up to be or what he or she would have grown up to be.  People also say that they dont believe in abortion but should be permitted if the pregnant woman was rapped.  I could see that a person might want to terminate a pregnancy after being rapped.  But the person could still have the baby and give it up for adoption if they didnt want to raise the child that way he or she could have a shot at life.

Barack Obama thinks that it is the womans right if she chooses to abort a pregnancy.  Although it is only the womans choice in the matter and that the father of the child has no right and no say in the situation.  So if the father wanted to keep the child and raise it he cant say that he doesnt permit her to allow the abortion.  Barack Obama stated on April 26, 2007 "I think that most Americans recognize that this is a profoundly difficult issue for the women and families who make these decisions. They don't make them casually. And I trust women to make these decisions, in conjunction with their doctors and their families and their clergy, and I think that's where most Americans are."  View the underlined part of Barack Obamas own words and notice how it says and and their clergy.  Members of the clergy would never approve with an abortion so why even bother consulting with them about the matter.

John McCain is totally against abortion and wants to overturn the Roe vs. Wade ruling.  He believes that life is a natural right and should not be taken away from anyone not even non-fully developed babies.  People might also say what have Republicans done on the issue itself.  While Bush was in office he stopped stem-cell research because it was taking away cells from babies that where still in the womb and could get to be very dangerous.  This is why I strongly am in support of Senator John McCain.

The 2008 election is an historic event in many aspects. Democrat Barack Obama, senator from Illinois and Republican John McCain, senator from Arizona battled it out for the right to be our next president. Whichever candidate were to win, it would be a great story. On one side, you have Barack Obama who was born to an interracial couple. His father was from the African nation of Kenya and his mother was from Kansas. Coming from nothing to possibly being the first African American president of the United States is a truly inspiring and unbelievable. John McCain was an American war veteran and hero Vietnam for being a POW in a North Vietnam prison camp, to possibly being the oldest first term elected president. Regardless of who wins, they will bring an incredible story with them, but my support is with Barack Obama.

In the 2008 Presidential Election, my vote would go to Illinois Senator and Democratic nominee Barack Obama. I believe he has the edge over John McCain on the issues that are the most important to our society. One of the issues that I agree with him on and cause me to support him is the war in Iraq. I agree with his stance on getting our troops out, but gradually. Keeping them there as McCain wants to I believe will cause even more damage to our economy, because we need to continue funding the project which is currently at almost 5 billion dollars a month. If they were out and we didnt need to fund the war, thats more money available to use on more important issues within the country and helping the economy.

McCain's experience in war and as a POW during Vietnam is actually a downside to me. I believe it would make him more prone to making instinctive decisions for war when it really isnt needed. He also isnt as strong as Obama is in the most important issue we have, the economy. McCain wants to keep the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, which wont help out the struggling middle class American. Obama wants to repeal those cuts and target tax cuts for the middle class families who are struggling to keep up with the constantly increasing costs of living. The economy is where the most help is needed and Obama is without a doubt the man to address the issues with our economy.

One downfall to Senator Barack Obama is his relative inexperience in politics. What he lacks can be made up by his Vice President Joe Biden. Joe Biden has a lot of experience that he can share with Obama and help him, especially with foreign policy which is another Obama weakness. With Biden taking care of foreign policy, that leaves Obama to deal with his strength and the most pressing issue of the economy. John McCains VP, Governor Sarah Palin from Alaska has no experience and really isnt very qualified for such an important position.

I believe Barack Obama is the man we need to run our country and provide us with the change that is desperately needed. He has the ideas and the intelligence and determination to turn our country around and bring us back to the top. With the experienced Joe Biden by his side, he has the support needed to do it.

During this 2008 Presidential Election in which the Democrats are represented by Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, the Republicans by Senator John McCain of Arizona, and the various third party candidates, I support Senator Barack Obama of Illinois. I support Senator Obama for several reasons; these reasons are based on political views on matters important to me, and my opposition to his main rival, Senator McCain. If I had a vote in the race on November 4, it would be a vote for change, a vote for Barack Obama.

Although I support Senator Obama one hundred percent, only a few months ago I was on the fence for whom I agreed with. Now that I have become more involved and politically in tuned, I can safely say I want Senator Obama as the next President of the United States of America. I must also admit that prior to the announcements of vice presidential running mates I still felt that it was any candidates race.

The vice presidential choices for the candidates further strengthened my views on much of the country. When Senator Obama picked a strong Democratic senator from Delaware named Joe Biden, I felt he had made one of the best picks for vice president. On the other hand I was completely disgusted and ashamed in Senator McCains choice for vice president. Many voters whom I am familiar with were also disgusted with McCains VP choice and it caused some to change their vote.

Senator McCains choice was a choice for hate, he has used her spur the racist undertow of America so he can try and gain back the evangelical vote. Senator McCain knows many Americans cant stand to vote for a black man for high offices and he used this to essentially promote hate. Even though you cannot control the views and minds of your supporters you still have the power to stop them from yelling racist and stereotypical remarks during rallies. While McCain has used Obamas skin color to attempt and gain the racist vote, Barack Obama has not used his skin in any way, which he could have done on several occasions.

Some views of Senator Barack Obama also represent many of my views or at least the basis of many of my views, while others I may not fully agree with they are exceptionally better and more agreeable than the views of McCain. Even views on topics, such as the financial crisis, which I still do not fully understand, I am in support of Barack Obama. It has not been mentioned by anyone that I have heard, but it seems to me that a man whose campaign nearly went completely bankrupt, due to excessive spending, (like the Straight Talk Express 2.0, which cost ten thousand dollars a day to operate) should not be the president during one of the worst financial crisis in United States history.

Many may feel that Obamas call for change is cliché or outrageous but, as I sit here and research voter initiatives and political views of states I realize that this change must come now. When there are states such as; Florida, Arizona, and California still voting to ban same sex marriage. There are even two states, Nebraska and Colorado, which are trying to ban Affirmative Action. These truly are a time for change.

In the election of 2008 I fully support Senator Barack Obama. To me he is the best man for the presidency of the United States. I think he is the person who will help to heal a hurt country. With the economy in shambles and the war in Iraq looking grimmer and grimmer, I think Obama could do us good. I agree with his views on the issues and how he will work to fix the errors of the bush administration. Obama is in my opinion the person who will help to fix and restore America to the once great nation it was.

I think the war in Iraq is a major issue in the election of 08. I think this because the people I grew up with friends, siblings, family could be affected if McCain would become president and initiate a draft. However Obama has a 16 month plan to withdraw from Iraq and bring our troops home. No more losses, no more hurt families, and no more tax dollars spent on a solution less war. McCain however wants to initiate a surge strategy calling for more troops. I think Obamas policy for Iraq is something most Americans do support because many families are hurting from this war and I support Obamas plan.

Climate change is also a big issue to me. Obama has this well laid out plan to reduce greenhouse gas emission by eighty percent by 2050. He also wants America to take the lead in the effort against global warming and plans to invest in the cause. However McCain is only going to handle global warming if other countries join in the effort. The way Obama is ready to take on all these problems is amazing and inspiring people say he must be crazy to want to be president but I think he just hasnt given up on his country yet.

I also agree with Senator Barack Obama on his policies on illegal immigration and abortion. Obama wants better policed borders and stricter penalties against the hiring of undocumented workers. I think that would help with the struggle for jobs why should people be beaten out because some illegal immigrants will work for less but I think it is the businesses that hire these workers that are a problem. Also Obama wants to leave abortion up to the women which is the way it should be and the way it should stay. McCain however wants to make abortion illegal and repeal a Supreme Court ruling to do so. I think Obama hits the heart with a lot of his policies I do believe he is for the people not just the rich but for the people of the United States.

My support goes fully to Senator Barack Obama. The way he is ready and has already designed plans to help the country is assuring. His views on the issues are also another thing I agree with and I think that him trying to undo the damages of the Bush administration is going to help the country a lot. During the election of 2008 I believe that with Senator Barack Obama as president that we will rise from our hurt state and be brought back to the great prosperous country we once were.

I support Senator John McCain. I agree with many of his positions on the different issues. I also do not agree with many of Barack Obamas positions on the issues. For example; Barack Obama is opposed to the war, something no one will deny. But Obama believes we should send troops to Darfur in Africa to stop the crisis there. This is total heresy. Why should we go to Darfur, but not go to Iraq? At least Iraq posed a threat to American troops, and missions in Afghanistan. Darfur presents to danger to America in the slightest. Another position I agree with John McCain is gun control. I agree that we should not leave gun companies liable for gun crimes. That is ridiculous. Barack Obama would have us file law suits against gun companies. The gun companies cannot be at fault for something their product did after it is bought from them. As soon as it leaves their warehouses they should not be held responsible for any harm the guns MAY cause. I just think that is totally unfair. Thats like a guerilla fighter in Iraq saying to a gun company that one of your guns held by an American soldier killed my brother so Im going to sue you. That is just stupid. Another issue that Barack Obama and I disagree on is the issue of immigration. Obama said that Americans have nothing to fear from immigrants. I believe that we do, because if we dont stop the flow of illegal immigrants then they are going to flood our country with cheap labor and be a waste of money and resources trying to remove them all. We MUST secure our borders, especially to the south. Also, Senator Obama says that Americans have no responsibility to turn in illegal immigrants. If not for the American people how would we have caught most of the illegal immigrants in the country? If the average American citizen does not turn in illegals then they are doing nothing else than hurting America, and should be ashamed of themselves. Also, Obama supports Sanctuary Cities. I believe the only Sanctuary Cities for illegal immigrants are in their own countries. How can you say that we need to prevent illegal immigration, but then turn around and endorse such a program? That logic must be beyond me. Once again this is heresy. Obama goes and says that we need to prevent illegal immigration, but to all you illegals out there, if you go to City A, City B, or City C you can stay in America as long as you stay there, because you will be granted sanctuary. We might as well as invite Al Qaeda to smuggle their terrorists into those cities, because they will be granted sanctuary by the United States Government in those cities. Do you really want that to happen? Senator McCain however would secure our borders, would deny amnesty to any illegal immigrants, and would help teach all legal immigrants English. This is another issue McCain and I agree. So remember a vote for John McCain is a vote for a better, safer America. Not to spoil the election but all votes to McCain will be useless, because a majority of the country will be drunk with Obama Kool-Aid and McCain will lose the election by a landslide. Also if you live in Indiana dont expect a winner for another 48 hours because the officials have run out of fingers and toes and cant count who wins there. biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

President '08

I supported John McCain for president in the 2008 election for several reasons. I felt that he was experienced in politics as well as real life events and that his experiences would help to influence his choices in a positive way. Also, I believed he supported very reasonable opinions on many of the issues discussed during the presidential debates, and looked forward to seeing these plans be put into action were he to win.

I believe in John McCain's plan for Iraq very strongly. He has decided that it is necessary to keep our troops in Iraq until we have created a self-standing government. If we were to leave now, we would be leaving a country alone with no government and letting it continue to be a haven for terrorists. If we choose to leave Iraq, there is also a large possibility that we will be forced to return there for a larger war in the future. However, by staying in the Middle East until Iraq is able to govern itself, we can then safely withdraw and let country's government govern it properly.

Also, I am a supporter of John McCain's plan for immigration. John McCain has a two step process of dealing with illegal immigrants here in America. First, he plans on securing our nation's borders to ensure that the influx of illegal immigrants coming into this country will cease. Then, after the borders are secured, he will begin a process of reforming the present-day immigrants our country harbors. This he will do by implicating a visa process, in which immigrants will be able to apply for a work visa to temporarily stay in the United States to work. Also, he will make it harder for those without work visas to find work. John McCain also plans to search our present immigrants for those without proper citizenship, and require that they go through a citizenship process to receive their green card.

John McCain's opinion of the 2nd Amendment is another issue I am in support of. John McCain feels that it is criminals, not United States citizens, who are responsible fo gun violence here in America. Therefore, it should be criminals, not U.S. citizens, who are punished for gun violence. Unlike Senator Obama, McCain feels that the 2nd Amendment should be exercised fully, after sufficient background checking and assuring that an individual be qualified to own a weapon. He opposes bans on ammunition and assault rifles, saying that gun restrictions are a failed attempt at gun control, for the criminals who use guns in a violent manner give no regard to restrictions anyway.

I am in full support of John McCain's crime prevention plan as well. John plans to provide more funding and support to local as well as state police forces. Also, he plans to increase the amount of spectrum to allow more radio communication between emergency personnel, a problem our country saw after the attacks on September 11, 2001, as well as after Hurricane Katrina.

These are the issues that appeal to me, as an American citizen planning for a career in law enforcement, today. Also, I am in support of John McCain's economic plan over Barack Obama's, and am in support of his views on abortion and same-sex marriage and civil union as well.

This presidential election was to be a historic one no matter which way it went. On one end, there would have been the oldest president in US History with the first female Vice President, or on the other, there would have been the first president of black decent. But in my eyes, those weren't the important issues. I supported current President Elect Barack Obama throughout.
One of the defining points of the beginning of the Race was the Iraq War. Barack Obama was one of the few to oppose the invasion of Iraq from the beginning, while others went with the hysterical tide and voted to enter. He was someone who stood by what he believed in even though he could have saved face and jumped on the Self-Defense bandwagon. Obama very much wants to pull the American forces in Iraq out of the Warzone. Despite speculation that he wants an immediate and almost a pulling-the-table-cloth-from-under-the-dishes type of method, he actually wants to do it gradually to avoid an explosiona s a result of the withdrawal, which only makes sense.
Senator Obama also aimed to help the economy by issuing an important tax maneuver. Though people say he wanted to raise taxes for all to the point where no common family could pay them, he actually said he wanted to reduce taxes for those who did not make an enormous amount of money, and wanted to raise taxes for those who made over $250,000 a year. That idea is a great one in my eyes. This current economic crisis is a result of so few people controlling so much wealth and not looking out for anyone with less. Barack Obama's proposition might help fix that problem.
There was also the aspect of Obama's ethnic background. What I supported most about his approach to this was that he didn't run this campaign in hopes he would be elected despite his background or in spite of his background, but with indifference to it. He didn't aim for the blacks, but was still heard by them. He didn't aim for whites, but he swayed many. And he didn't depend on any demographic but a united one, an American demographic.
Barack Obama didn't hope to win to take the Blue states or to beat the Red states, but to take the United States of America, just like what he said. That's the main reason I supported him, he had no plan on winning any certain group, he wanted to appeal to everyone, something that little to no other candidate dared to try, or change.
