Assignment #4: Diversity Discussion

Step #1:  Let's begin an online discussion on these two topics: UNITY and DIVERSITY.  Think first about the question, "Can we be culturally united and respect diversity at the same time?"  Think about the ways that people are connected.  How many can you think of?  What do you think the future of America will look like?

Step #2:  I'd also like you to check out a couple of websites on this topic and get your thoughts about their messages.  The first is about
race.  The second is about America's population.  Write down 10 things that you learned from both of these sites (for example, 5 from one  site, 5 from another, or 6 and 4, or 7 and 3).

Step #3:  What do you think about diversity here at NBHS?  How can teachers respect diversity more?  Is racism a problem in New Bedford?  In what ways do people share culture?  Music?  Food?  Stories?  Can you give examples?

Grading:  Let's get the discussion started!  Pick one of the questions above or more of them.  We'll use this
rubric to grade the online discussion.  This is a graded assignment.  The more you post the better you'll be, but make your posts direct, relavent, specific, etc.  Have fun!  I'll be discussing in here too.

Step #1:  I believe that we can be united and still accept diversity. we as a class can sit together and participate in the most important thing, learning, together and help eachother and support eachother. i think that this is a prime example of this. we are all connected by this classroomand if we can all look at eachother by what we are connected with then the future for america stands strong in my eyes.

Step #2:
RACE:
1. no one can really judge
2. there is no way to catigorize asians
3. it is hard to judge native americans
4. style can fool someones judge of race

POPULATION:
1.By the middle of the century, the population of the United States will be larger and more racially and ethnically diverse
2.By 2050, minorities -- those who identify themselves as Hispanic, black, Asian, American Indian, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander or mixed race -- will account for 54 percent of the U.S. population
3.In 2000, the bureau projected a population of around 404 million for the year 2050, with minorities accounting for 47 percent
4.The Hispanic population is projected to nearly triple
5.Immigration is playing a leading role in both the growth and changing composition of the U.S. population, points out the Pew Research Center.
6.Asians are the third largest minority group

Step #3:  Diversity in NBHS is still sckewed but i believe will get better over time due to the increase in tollerence.  Teachers can simply look through someone elses eyes, look at a situation form someone elses point of view to gain perspective and be a better judge. Racism is not a problem in NBHS more than ignorence. As far as sharing culture it shows the most in fashion in New Bedford. Music i believe comes with age and fad as well as music comming with popularity but. I really cant give examples just observations which can simply be viewed by my responces. I am 17 and I live in New Bedford, it is typical for em to think a certain way and dress a certian way according to fad and age. to me it looks normal so it would take someone else to look and tell me what is so different.

Word. What I Think of the people of the future is that we may get an long great but there could still be some people out there in the world who does n't what race you are and where you are from.

Max Montille    1/30/09D period                                                                         Assignment #4: Diversity Discussion  "Can we be culturally united and respect diversity at the same time?" I think we can be unified and be diverse because the more diverse we become the for unified we are. We Americans are connected in many ways like music. Some music connected us together like in the 1950s when Ray Charles came out with his music. When his music plays both white and black were dancing together because both races like the music. America in the future looks like a country that wouldnt see color because every one would be mix.

UNFINISH!!!

Step One:

I think that we can be culturally united and respect diversity at the same time. Mixed marriages are a way we can be just that. For example, my brother and his wife. She is Portuguese and my brother is Vietnamese. They both respect each other's customs. Also, schools and workplaces are a way we are connected. People of different races are able to work together in an environment without any problems.I think that if we are able to get along now, I think that America will grow into a stronger place as a whole.

Step Two:

RACE -
1.) ancient societies did not divide people by their physical differences, but by religion, status, class, and language.
2.) race has no genetic basis.
3.) you can't predict anything about a person just by looking at them.
4.) people can look like they are a certain race, but in fact they couldt be completely different.

POPULATION-
1.) by 2023, more than half will belong to a minority racial or ethnic group
2.) the census predicted a faster-growing and more diverse population
3.) Hispanics are the fastest-growing minority group, and the population is projected to nearly triple
4.) Asians are the third largest minority group -- and the second fastest-growing group -- in the United States
5.) the 2000 census was the first in which people could identify themselves as belonging to two or more races.
6.) by 2050, the number of people classified as mixed race is projected to more than triple

Step Three:

There is a huge diversity in NBHS, and I think that I don't think that teachers should just assume what you are. I think they should ask respectfully what their nationality is, and maybe learn a little bit of where they are coming from. I noticed that in New Bedford that some people feel the need to put down minorities because they aren't they same as them. I think like in 'A Class Divided' that it makes them feel better about themselves.  Music comes from all over the world. I'm not sure if people notice, but I see music artists taking different aspects of different countries and adding them into their beats. Also, food unites us in a way in my opinion. There's lots of restuarants all over the U.S. We get to try new foods coming from different countries all over the world. For example, there are  Italian, Mexican, Chinese restuarants and more. One of my favorite places to eat is a Japanese place called Shabu Zhen in Chinatown. Books are also an excellent way to explore different countries and their cultures. While reading a book, you can discover things that you never knew about a certain culture and the things they celebrate along with their superstitions and rituals.

RACE
1. Until 1960, census enumerators classified people how they look.
2. race has no genetic basis because all of us are the same, the only thing thats different is our skin color.
3. Not all asians are chines
4. Race is a social idea
5. colorblindness would not end racism

Populatiom
1.United States will be larger and more racially and ethnically diverse.
2.Hispanics are the fastest growing minority group.
3.Hispanic population is projected to nearly triple, from almost 47 million to 133 million in the near future .
4.Nearly 20 percent of Americans will be foreign born in 2050.
5.Asians are the third largest minority group, and the second fastest growing group in the United States.

The diversity in NBHS is huge because so much people are mix and it's are to say if some one is hispanic or black or even white. Teachers can respect diversity more by acting like we are one of there family members and talk about diversity and race in the class rooms. racism is not realy a problem but there are some ignorant people out there how think there race is better then other. People share culture by talking about it and by letting other to understand there culture by playing ther music and tasting there food and telling stories about the culture and how it was form.

We can definetly be culutrally united an respect diversity, by learning of other cultures as well as your own, and respecting each other, it can be done. People are connected through families communities, citys, states, countries, races, friendship. I think the future of america will be positive if an open mind can be kept and people can become accepting and tolerant. We are the human race above all other.

there is alo of diversity here  at Nbhs. teachers can respect diversity by not trying to categorize someone as soon as they see them exp. Oh this person is ______ there going to be a bad student. etc. Racism is a problem everywhere but not so much in newbedford because of the mixture. it still exists here though. People share culture through music, food, and medai arts, and many other ways.

Step 1:

I think we can be culturally united and respect diversity.  The only way this is possible is if we are not ignorant and accept people for being different.  For example, I have friends of many different customs.  They accept me for my customs and I accept them of theirs.  There is no reason not to really.  So what if they dress differently, or eat different types of food, we are all still humans with similar goals.  We all want an education, a good paying job, a loving family and so forth.  The future of America looks good, and looks better than it has before concerning being culturally united.  Part of the thanks goes to Barack Obama and the rest goes to the young boys and girls who start out young accepting people's cultures.

Step 1.

I think we should be able to respect diversity and unite culturally . In all aspects of life - marriage jobs as well as at home and in schools . In all these aspects of life people are able to work together and get along  by respecting diversity and each other .

Step 2.

RACE
1. Ancient societies did not divide people by their physical differences, but by religion, status, class, and language.
2. Race has no genetic basis because all of us are the same, the only thing thats different is our skin color.
3. Not all asians are chinese
4. Race is a social idea

2. Hispanic population is projected to nearly triple, from almost 47 million to 133 million in the near future .
3. Asians are the third largest minority group, and the second fastest growing group in the United States.
4. The census predicted a faster-growing and more diverse population
5. Hispanics are the fastest-growing minority group, and the population is projected to nearly triple

Step 3.

Diversity in nbhs is seen two ways - because alot of nbhs is divided into groups but most people get along regardless . The teachers at nbhs could help by respectin everyone or by puttin people from different backgrounds into the same groups . Racism is a problem in new bedford - but people share cultres with thier music thier food and thier styles .

1.What I think of diversity in NBHS is that this school is bad for the student who come to school to learn.
2.How Teacher can be an diverity and respect if they do not tell  an student who is an outside go back to where you come from.
3. The question everyone ask is NB is an racism problem because everyone you have to hear someone discrinmation becuase they are fat, ugly, race, skincolor, face.
4. The way people share culture is that they get together and disscuss where you came from.
5.An another thing people share culture is by the music like Bachata Xtreme who music is about love of an women.
